As Drosophila researchers well understand, fly tipping is a time-consuming task that diverts attention from core scientific activities. To address this, we collaborated with engineers to create a user-friendly plastic device specifically designed to expedite the transfer of flies to fresh media. This innovation allows us to efficiently process 10 vials in the time it once took to manage just one, significantly enhancing laboratory productivity and allowing more time for critical research tasks 1.
The Drosoflipper is ingeniously designed to keep vials permanently attached, facilitating seamless operations without the traditional use of cottonthereby reducing both cost and waste. Each vial is equipped with a durable fabric filter that features micro-perforations as small as 100m, effectively retaining larvae and mites. These filters are designed for extended use, remaining effective for up to three months, and are fully reusable. Maintenance is straightforward: simply cleanse with water using a soft brush or place in the dishwasher for effortless sanitation..
We started thinking about a device to help in fly tipping, as we are Drosophila researchers and we spend a lot of time doing this laborious task.
We joined a team of engineers and came up with a simple, yet ingenious device that allows fast transfer of flies to fresh media.
This new way of tipping your flies allows you to tip 10 vials in seconds. It is also cotton-free, which saves a lot of money.
